Taiwan is located in East Asia just south of Japan. The island is not internationally well known for its scuba diving. But when you come to dive here, you will see more than you ever imagined possible. Taiwan is home to some marine life unique to these waters. The water temperature is sub tropical and the water is crystal clear in the southern regions.

Warm currents coming from the Philippines in the south brings comfortable water temperatures of up to 30 degrees especially, in the sub-tropical southern half. The coral growth is diverse and abundant in these warmer regions. It’s not uncommon to have a visibility of 30-40 meters in these deep blue waters. With these settings, it makes it ideal for underwater photography and videography.

The most notable dive sites are found on Orchid Island, and Green Island, which are offshore islands in the southeast. Kenting has the best diving on the main island. It is located on the southernmost tip. You will find underwater pinnacles, coral gardens, walls teeming with life and much other mysterious sea life to be found. Such as sea turtles, manta rays, schools of hammerhead sharks in the winter, lionfish, nemo fish, cuttlefish, baby shrimp, lobsters, and sometimes a fascinating green glow from plankton called bioluminescence when you go night diving.

For people living in the north, there are some great shore dives in and around Long Dong Bay just south of Keelung.  The northeast coast is famous for its beaches and surfing, however diving is also growing in popularity.  This is the place where most beginner divers learn to dive.  There are many easy access dive sites with many unique fish to be discovered. Don’t be surprised if you encounter some cuttlefish or squid colonies here!

This fascinating creature has fan like fins that expand to look as if it flies through the water. There's also the adorable yellow and black miniature squid that is a delight to see.
