Orchid is a 45km squared volcanic island located off the southeastern coast of Taiwan. It is home to the Yami people who migrated there about 800 years ago. The Japanese declared it an ethnological research area off-limits to the public. The Chinese took over in 1945 and lifted the restriction in 1967. Due to this, the people’s culture has been widely preserved. The island was named after the Phalaenopsis orchids; which grow there. It is a mountainous island with sharp peaks dominating its backdrop. It is accessible by ferry from Taitung or Kenting. The only airline to fly there is Daily Air from Taitung.
Orchid is a semi-tropical island. This means the water temperature goes up as high as 30 degrees with bright blue skies in the spring, summer and early fall. This makes scuba diving on Orchid extremely comfortable. If you wear a 3mm wetsuit, you won’t have to worry about getting cold. The perfect weather above the surface also creates fantastic visibility below the surface. You can expect to see as far as 25-30 meters (80-100 feet) on an ideal day.
Orchid is a sensational place to do the Advanced Open Water Scuba Course, take a Specialty Course or just plain fun dive. There is a wide assortment of dive choices. There are vertical walls teeming with life, narrow passages of coral caverns, an underwater passage you can swim through, a massive shipwreck broken into 3 pieces; which is also a deep dive, you can swim between pointy pinnacles with coral gardens at its base, relax and drift with the current as you observe life passing you by or practice your photography or videography skills as you absorb your surroundings.
The marine life of this region is very diverse. The fish population is growing and the coral diversity is marvelous. The small coral fish population is very abundant. There is one special dive where it’s possible to see a big colony of anemone fish (nemo) living closely together. I have never seen so many of them together before. You have the opportunity to see green turtles, bump head parrotfish, milkfish, tuna, mantis shrimp and octopus. You will most likely see schooling fusiliers, sea snakes, many varieties of nudibranchs, tunicates and porcelain crabs.
Most people believe it’s better to go to Orchid during the spring, summer or autumn. The truth is winter is just as good if not, better. Although the water temperature may be colder, there’s also less plankton in the water, making the visibility impeccable. Little Orchid Island just south of the main island is known to have schools of hammerhead sharks to come during their mating season. During this time, they are docile and pay no attention to scuba divers. We can offer dive trips to see these majestic animals if there is a sufficient amount of people interested.
