Kenting is located on the southern tip of Taiwan and is Taiwan’s only tropical beach playground area. People nation-wide come for the hot weather, beautiful scenery, white sand beaches, surfing, nightlife, shopping and its superb scuba diving.
The Kuroshio Current flows warm waters from the south. This makes the water temperature rise to about 30 degrees during the summer and stays as warm as 24 degrees during the winter. This makes diving in Kenting comfortable all year round. With these warm water temperatures, you can learn how to dive at any time of the year.
Kenting Marine Park is home to a wide diversity of marine life. You can find up to 60% of the known coral species worldwide. It’s also home to over 1,000 species of reef fish. It’s possible to see schools of Moorish Idols in April, Fusiliers, Unicorn Fish, Sweetlips, Surgeon Fish, Groupers, as well as sea turtles, Jack Fish, and Great Barracuda to name a few.
If the conditions are ideal it’s highly recommended to go to the “Seven Stars” (Chi Shin Yen), which is 10km south by boat from Erluanbi Lighthouse, the most southern point of Taiwan. The currents can be strong and you go as deep as 35 meters, therefore, it’s definitely for advanced divers only. If the opportunity arises, keep an eye out for pelagic game fish such as sailfish, umbrella swordfish, mahi mahi, and flying fish during spring and summer. White and black swordfish can be found during autumn and winter. Many species of tuna can be found all year round especially in May. You can also look out for jack fish and schools of trevallies as well.
The dry season from late autumn to early spring may be slightly colder but it also offers better visibility. From May to October, the strong winds, rain run-off, and occasional typhoons stir up the bottom sediment during this wet season, and the plankton blooms during the summer months reduces visibility. Regardless of any season, the visibility can still be up to 20-30 meters on a bright sunny day.
The dive sites are located within a short drive from each other. Most of these sites are accessible by shore with easy, calm entry and exit points, others present some challenges to inexperienced divers such as walking on lava flow rock, which border much of the coastline. Because of this, it’s always advised to go with a dive guide or someone who has experience in the local area.
